Drive through most area neighborhoods and you’ll find a school that bears the name of a President or a Supreme Court Justice, a First Lady or a military hero. What may surprise you is that many schools, learning centers and stadiums carry the names of Our Lady of the Lake University alumni. Consider the high school in Schertz that opened in 2005 and won a Class 5A state football championship five years later. It’s named after Byron P. Steele, a former teacher, principal and superintendent of Malone ISD, Devine ISD and Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD who earned his master’s of education (MEd) in 1964. Steele became a professional boxer to pay for college expenses. He pursued his master’s at OLLU while working as a classroom teacher.
